Theren: Half-Elf Bard
Oct 2nd, 2009 at 4:07am
Theren Delmarr has always been painfully different. His mother threw aside the conventional constraints of Holderness to distinguish herself as a militia captain of some skill and renown. Young and emboldened by her skill at arms, Willow Kierin set off and adventured for a while in the world at large, much to the chagrin of her modestly well of family. Her return two summers later was equally unexpected, as was the obviously half-elven child she carried in her arms.
Willow eventually married Jaems Delmarr, a man distinguished by his uncanny luck getting caravans across harsh stretches of wilderness without undue delay or attack, and bore him three children of his own, but refused to give Theren up. He was raised among his siblings, four, six, and eight years his junior but for whom physically passing Theren was a kind of familiar rite of passage. Due to his elven blood, Theren aged slowly and wasn’t considered “teenaged” until he was nearly thirty, a fact that was made all the more painfully obvious by a rash of childhood maladies. By then, the children he had played with had children of their own. Theren’s slow physical development left him somewhat introverted, but the extra time to puzzle through things on his own resulted in his extraordinary insight, his mental faculties and improvisation two things which he has learned to lean on.
Theren always demonstrated a talent for magic and the arts, something that made him popular with Holderness’ annual arts festivals and plays, and which led to speculation that his father was some kind of great elven mage. He was even offered the chance to study with a renowned travelling minstrel, but passed the opportunity up because he recognized the man as a charlatan who used simple tricks to impress simple folk, and Theren knew he was meant for greater things.
Instead, followed his mother’s path and joined the militia when he was deemed sturdy enough to survive the training. His talent for leading and inspiring his fellow militiamen was exceeded only by his ability to formulate brilliant strategies on the fly. He earned the ire of his trainers for not following the tenants of battle they espoused, and was whispered to have perhaps too much elven treachery in his blood. His fellow militiamen, however, loved working with him, and learned that if Theren was on the battlefield they had a chance to succeed, no matter the odds. It was amongst these men and women, most from the lowest section of society without many options or education, that Theren truly came into his own.
His time with them would prove short, as a cryptic summons for Willow was sent from Krys, the elven citadel. She was reluctant, and the rumors started again that the former adventurer had a tryst above her station that now had come back to haunt her. She left with a caravan bound for two small stops and then to sell its wares in Krys; that caravan was never heard from again. Theren left the militia, taking only his sword and armor from his militia days, a wand he stole from the charlatan minstrel in a moment of wickedness, and his mother’s elven filigree chain, which he fingers in moments of contemplation.
His eclectic mix of skills has served him well in his time on the road. He has been picking up odd jobs where he can, focusing on guarding caravans bound for Krys in the hope that he finds someone who knows about his mother’s fate. Time will tell if he finds more trouble than he can handle.
