Quote:I can't tell if you're referencing 1st or 2nd edition AD&D.
I refer to 2nd edition, though I have read some books from 1e, I wasn't to drawn in. By all means do not get me wrong AD&D core when I first played it, it was great. But since that time, IMO its fun to make it better. Since I have made it better, core to me would be boring.
Quote:For me, the difference between OD&D/AD&D and almost every other game, including 3.x and 4.0, is that the former is centered around how good a player you are and the later are centered around how good a character you've got.
I agree, the newer versions don't really let the imagination roam as the former did. Another reason why I defend AD&D.
Quote:"OD&D/AD&D challenges players, and most other games challenge characters." I'd rather be challenged as a player.
Personally I like to challenge both, it makes for better gaming.
Quote:Never let the rules get in the way of a fun game. That's my biggest problem with how 3.x and the upcoming 4.0 attempt to codify everything into a hard and fast rule, where the DM is nothing but an interface between the books and the players.
Again we are in complete agreement, there shouldn't be a "rule" for everything. Table top is suppose to be fun. Another reason 3.0 and up does not appeal to me.
Quote:Karloff, we may disagree in our opinions of the core books
Perhaps, I just like to make things better for all involved. AD&D 2e is the first actually rpg I've played, and its like your first love and don't wanna let it go. It's not time for her to go anyway.
Quote:but it seems we agree that AD&D is still a great game.
Yep and it always will be as long as good DM's exist and not to mention they like to challenge players and their characters.
Quote:Also, it would be pretty much a guarantee that you couldn't drive me crazy as a DM, cause I love when players come up with creative solutions ... especially if it involves something not found in any rulebook!
Thats the fun of playing, to think of new ideas. To expand your and your character. I have driven many a DM a little nutts with the crazy stuff I have come up with. But its all for the fun.
It also shows the lack of real people, that people table tops now-a-days. Most just want something quick and easy to play. I prefer players enjoy the gaming session and want them to continue.
