Brenna Ironforge - Dwarven Cleric
Jun 4th, 2010 at 4:45am

Brenna is sonnlinor "those who work stone" a cleric of Moradin.  She stands 4'10", quite tall for a dwarf, in fact at times, if not for her broad facial features, hardened demeanor and thickness of her overall physical appearance, one could mistake her for a shorter human.  Having served as a cleric of Moradin within her clan for more than twenty years, she has once again sought to find a path outside the familiarity of her clan and homeland...(more to come, still fleshing out some key elements.)

Growing up as a Star Forger...

Trained like all of her fellow Clan Star-Forger dwarves in the arts of working the forges as did Moradin, she learned to work & fight with the ore on a daily basis since she could stand and work the bellows.  Blessed by Moradin himself, some in the clan have said, Brenna has an excellent ability with the forge, becoming an accomplished maker of weapons and armor.  Her ties to Moradin were stronger than many in her family, rivaling that of some  Not one to stay too rooted to her homeland, especially when Moradin’s justice was needed in the wilds, she ventured past the deep caverns and into the forests with a group of her friends, all determined to seek out new friends and rid the surface world of the evil.

The legacy of the clan is known throughout all the clans and with that comes a talent and fervor that is encouraged at a very young age.  Most dwarves of the clan want to be the best armorer or weaponsmith and Brenna was no exception.  She forged many suits of armor AND weapons well before her 16th winter, imbuing many of them with the power of Moradin himself.  Her skills in using her weapons was never equaled whilst in the clan, not until she was part of the clans rite of passage in the mines.  The rite was a group of younger dwarves from different families along with three to six experienced dwarves that mentored them, showing them basic techniques of finding their way underground in the deep caverns, fighting in close quarters, making use of the terrain and of course how to find and extract the different types of ore, lasting as long as six months but rarely less than two months.  It usually led to closer knit families, that became better as a community as all shared equally in any finds.

During the third month Brenna and a group of three others came across a trail of goblins numbering close to forty.  Signs also showed a troll as well, but the tracks seemed old, so they proceeded onward slowly, hoping to get more information before blindly running back for the others, not knowing if this was a test or the evil enemies of legend.  Up until this point, she and her friends had only fought one another in training and a few wolves or bear in the forest.  The goblins must have heard the groups working the stone and wanted to try a quick sneak attack but little did they know, there were almost a score of dwarves, not just the four in each scouting group.  The goblins would stand little chance against that many dwarves in even a three-to-one fight but with the troll in tow, that would mean different tactics and likely some severely injured or possibly dead clansmen.  Brenna called them together and made a plan of action, all but she was a fighter, so she thought of a powerful spell that would push her foes backwards into the rough terrain, while her friends would be more resistant to their attacks.  They stood shoulder to shoulder in a tight area, with many juts and boulders, and drew them in as much as possible and then as the battle joined, she struck out using her magic and the goblins were blown back by the magic.  The dwarves stepped up and with her protective magic still active, they fended them off quite effectively, pushing them backwards with magic as they got too close.  The other dwarves, had come back sooner and hearing the commotion, came forth from the campsite, knowing the last group was still searching the caves.

Together the dwarves banded together and eliminated all but three goblins, the troll was among the last to die, as the dwarves superior tactics and small size enabled them to move much easier in their surroundings.  Brenna and her group were welcomed back with words of praise and cunning.  They had worked hard and well together, making the clan their first priority and saving many dwarves lives that day.  Only five were truly injured, everyone was hurt after all but there were no deaths.  Brenna was rewarded with a small magic sword, carried by the goblin leader.  The weapon had reverted back to its normal form, a weapon of dwarven make and style, a Mordenkrad.  Although not the leader of her group, she was praised by the other three for using her magic so effectively that they felt she deserved it.  In the next few months, in gratitude of their generosity she worked hard and enchanted new weapons and armor for each of them from all the ore they gathered.

During the night, Brenna stirs and shifts a few times as the embers glow is at its lowest point, a faint shimmer of very dim light overshadows the embers soon and it grows gradually brighter.  Seconds later, Brenna wakes up, the light becoming so bright it shines past the thin cloth of the bedroll.  She moves slowly, her combat instincts taking over and she does not want to alert anyone who might see her, although as she slowly pulls the blanket back, it seems so bright that it must be morning.

She gets up slowly, still feeling a bit tired and as she does, she realizes that no one else is up yet it seems to be almost mid-sun.  She moves around the first wagon and sees no sign of anyone either in the wagons or near them.  As she turns back towards her bedroll, a warhammer sits atop it.  She instinctively reaches down to her own belt and finds that she has none of her weapons at all.  She drops lower and scans the tree line, searching for any enemy but finds no one there and the warhammer still sits there.

Moving closer, she notices that the warhammer is glowing slightly but with the bright sunlight, it is difficult to discern at all.  She picks it up and sees the symbol of Moradin upon it, etched into the mithral hammer head, surrounded by symbols of power and strength written in dwarvish.  As she holds it in both her hands, she feels the power and strength of Moradin within her, surrounding and enveloping her in a soothing strength she has not felt since she was still amongst only the dwarves of the Star Forger clan.  The light from the weapon slowly ebbs away, and she is standing alone before a great forge that is white hot and feels warm, like the sun upon one’s face, not the oppressive heat that one would expect from the forge.  She recalls the first time she crafted her first suit of armor, just days after her first weapon, a warhammer dedicated to Moradin.

An owl’s call can be heard as Brenna wakes with a start, her Mordenkrad in her hands as she sits up, lying in the same place she bedded down, earlier that evening.  Most everyone is asleep except the one on watch, his back to her and part of the wagon obstructing her view.  It is still night and the warhammer in her dream is nowhere to be found and at once she realizes that Moradin has entered her dreams and reminded her that she serves him and that the skills and abilities she has have been given by him and that no dwarf should ever allow themselves to feel ashamed at their God given abilities.  She feels a calm that she did not possess hours ago and in fact feels foolish about being worried about the simple peasant’s scorn and derision.  Her companions knew her worth in such a short time and she was once again reminded of its value.  Knowing the coming days would have more martial tests than those of the will, she was calmed in knowing that one more battle had been finished.  She moved towards the person on watch, clearing her throat softly enough not to wake the others but to alert whomever was on watch where she was without being alarmed.

She smiled as she stepped around the wagon to take her shift and thought, “The next day would be a better one!”

As the cool night air brushed her face, Brenna thought about what the next few days would bring their way.  Her and her new companions were, well they were NEW.  Not used to each other nor did they share battle styles or tactics and yet they had a distinct way of fighting that had been very effective in the fights thus far.  A fighter who seemed quite honor bound to complete a task, not even given to him but one which he seemed to be an active part, told that secret and ancient weapons would have a chance of destroying such evil.  Her own mordenkrad, imbued with magic, enabled her to better damage some of her opponents at times but the weapon did not have a known enemy or purpose like this weapon they searched for on this journey.

Brenna knew in her heart that she had no purpose as of late, despite her experiences amongst the other races of the world, far more than many of her clan or several clans put together had in the same amount of time.  Almost without exception the dwarves had kept to themselves for centuries, the few clans that chose to live nearer to and interact with the humans, elves and other races were different than many of the clans.  Differences were fine, so were the other races as far as she was concerned, it was the individuals that she had problems with in the past.  No longer judging the people she met by what was known or rather experienced by others.  No, at this time and from now on all of her decisions would be made by the experiences she had with the individuals not the race or group as a whole.  There would be exceptions with everyone she met and would always be true as more worlds became known to her, it just was….

Brenna’s experience with her mordenkrad in combat has shown her how much her power and strength has been fused with the divine powers that Moradin has granted her.  As she has become more skilled in it’s use, she along with Moradin’s help and guidance, has shown her how to use both in a more efficient manner.  (Versatile Expertise Level 6 feat, granting a +1 when using both hammers and her holy symbol.)  Aiding her companions as best she can, she has noticed that at times her abilities in the divine seem to stretch far beyond that of her field prowess, moving slower than she would like at times.  It is true that within the span of a month, she has found a better balance between her martial & divine powers into a more efficient style of battle.  However, at times she has asked for Moradin’s help in battle but knows that he does not grant just anyone, no matter how devout they were.  She has learned however that even a small blessing in his name can turn the tide of battle just as much as a larger one, so in that she has comfort and a stronger faith in Moradin and the gods.  (Utility – lvl 6 Daily Standard action- Divine favor grants me or one ally until the end of the encounter, a +2 power to attack AND damage rolls & when first bloodied, target can spend a healing surge as a free action.)

As she devotes more of her spirit to Moradin and trusts in her martial skills, she finds that they are sometimes one and the same.  Although at times she questions how much some of her techniques could be more refined...as the day moves forward, she takes the time to contemplate and reflect on recent events but moreso, the future.

Brenna’s hands hold her mordenkrad tightly, as she shifts her weight to her back foot, preparing to charge against the orc who has disturbed their camp this night.  As she moves left, to make sure the light from the fire will distract them just enough and add a few more shadows where she is standing, she sees that they are grouped together almost shoulder-to-shoulder all of them within a twenty foot radius.
She decides at once to charge into their midst, feigning a strike she invokes Moradin’s light from her holy symbol, freezing all the orcs in their places for brief seconds as her friends are bathed in the peaceful radiance that is Moradin.  Seemingly still affected by the bright light, her friends attack with fury as even Brenna attacks with her hammer.  Demoralized and soundly beaten the few that live of the orcs fade into nothing as she wakes from her dream.  Meditating on his wisdom and her own and now inspired by Moradin in the different ways of battle she can use the power of Moradin's radiant light to keep them distracted just long enough for her allies to take advantage on the battlefield.  (Retrain encounter 3 Light of Arvandor to Astral Flare – Close burst 3(5) Each enemy in burst, wisdom vs. will, Target is dazed until the end of your next turn.)  Moradin is always courageous as she must be in battle and using his courage as an example, has learned that to gain your foes attention and focused on her, she may easily help turn the tide of battle for future fights.

As the long journey down such a peaceful river,  has forced Brenna to contend with the flow and power that can be generated by such a small force when it is allowed to flow along a given pathway.  She is inspired by Moradin to explore how she can attack her opponent and overwhelm them by her will alone, allowing her to strike and distract her opponent long enough to heal any of them nearby while the attacker is busy fighting.  She recalls how focus in any task can allow clarity whether divinely inspired or not.

Working with Luke as they move through the dense jungle area, allows her to test him and help him keep his balance better moving up, over and around so much debris.  in seeing him take root in his stances and move more comfortably in difficult terrain, she is reminded how fragile all of her companions have become and can become with a few well placed blows in combat.  Her armor allows her some respite from some of the more deadly elements at times but even she is victim to a better opponent or just a lucky one who can land a blow.  Perhaps pleased by her willingness to sacrifice and care for her companions, Moradin talks to Brenna in a peaceful dream, showing her how to give of her life energies and heal her companions more often in the heat of battle.

Toughened in these past three days, she knows that her spirit can help her define how she acts and channels all of her energies both martial and divine.

**New Level 7 encounter power: Strike of Judgment, Divine power, striking at the heart of his will, the next time the target hits OR misses an ally before the end of your next turn, one ally of your choice within 5 squares of the target regains 10 hit points.

Retraining of divine favor level 6 utility power replacing it with Stream of Life.  I take ongoing 5 damage (save ends).  Damage can't be reduced in any way.  At the end of your turn, you can choose not to make a saving throw against the ongoing damage.  Whenever you take the ongoing damage, an ally within 5(7) squares of you regains 15 hit points.**
