Hex for large scale (more directions in which to move - very useful over long distances), grid for small scale (combat encounters).

I'd be all about hexes for combat, but the reality is that, assuming we're talking about D&D here, the combat system is designed for grids.

With Avalon Hill roots that long pre-date D&D, I'm a hex man, but when using published modules, sometimes it *is* easier to use the grid.  For my own stuff, it's hex almost all the way.
