Races in Al-Qadim
Dec 28th, 2008 at 8:52pm

Races are chosen from the list below, not the ones in the Conan book. Races occupy different roles than typical fantasy settings. Check with the GM if you have questions about appropriate roles. Multi-racial characters, Ajami (barbarians from outside Zakhara), and unusual races will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

A.Human (Al-Badia, Desert Nomads):
1.The majority of desert dwellers are humans. Most tribes are enlightened; the first Grand  Caliph, who discovered the law of the lore-giver in a cave, came from the Al-Badia. Faith is simpler than in the cities, but no less sincere.
2.Adaptability: two skills always treated as class skills and at +2 above points assigned.
      3.+1 fate points
      4.Speed: 30 ft
      5.+2 Con, -2 Int
6.Background skills: craft/profession, ride, survival (desert), any 1 selected by player
      7.Favored class: Nomad

B. Human (Al-Hadhar, City Dwellers):
1.Humans are the largest group in Zakharan cities. Religiously, they run the gamut from Pragmatic to Moralist, worshiping any or all of the enlightened gods according to their individual conscience.
2.Adaptability: two skills always treated as class skills and at +2 above points assigned.
      3.Size: Medium
      4.Speed: 30 ft
      5.+ 2 Int, -2 Wis
6.background skills: craft/profession, knowledge, haggling, any 1 selected by player
      7.Favored class: Any

C.Dwarves (Al-Hadar):

1.Enlightened dwarves typically live in their own cities or in enclaves of human cities. Their buildings and culture in some ways resembles desert tribes of the american southwest, such as the Zuni and the Hopi. They are industrious workers, devout moralists, and fierce defenders of their people and the faith.
      2.Darkvision (60 ft)
      3.Size: Medium
      4.Speed: 20 ft
      5.+2 Con, -2 Cha
6.background skills: craft/profession, knowledge, appraise, any 1 selected by player
      7.Favored Class: Soldier

D.Elves (Al-Badia):

1.The earliest dwellers of the deserts of Zakhara, the elves are fleet-footed nomadic hearders who travel by night. They are reputed to have more contacts with the genies and other fantastic beings than is good for anyone's soul, although most are enlightened, worshiping the same gods as any other Zakharan.
      2.Low-light vision
      3.Size: Medium
      4.Speed: 30 ft
      5.+2 Dex, -2 Con
6.background skills: craft/profession, survival (desert), knowledge, any 1 selected by player
      7.Favored Class: Borderer

E.Gnomes (Al-Hadhar):
1.Unlike dwarves, Gnomes have few cities of their own, dwelling amongst Human and Dwarven Al-Hadhar. They are ethoists religiously, more tolerant of other faiths than the dwarves. They rarely dabble in the dark arts, but excel at simpler magic and alchemy.
      2.Low-light vision
      3.Size: Small
      4.Speed: 20 ft
      5.+2 Con, -2 Str
6.background skills: craft/profession, knowledge, alchemy, any 1 selected by player
      7.Favored Class: Scholar

F.Halfling (Al-Hadhar):
1.Halfings are not technically enlightened, but they are nonetheless tolerated in the land of fate. It is said that when Fate took the form of a woman and walked upon the earth in ancient times to share her wisdom with the genies, gods, and men, she left her teachings in the hands of a halfling known as the lore-giver. Today they live amongst the Al-Hadhar.
      2.Lucky: +2 Fate Points
      3.Size: Small
      4.Speed: 20 ft
      5.+2 Dex, -2 Str
6.background skills: craft/profession, knowledge, diplomacy,  any 1 selected by player
      7.favored class: Thief

Notes about Racial Abilities:
A.Favored classes received bonus feats at 1st, 5th, and 10th (class) level (p25-26)
B.The character's four background skills are always treated as class skills and begin at +4. Note that this is higher than Conan standard (p25). Choose only one craft or profession, and one knowledge if applicable.
