As i understand it, "Blast" is the stupid mans cone area spell. Which is why I would prefer a cone instead of a gimped circle. I would still want to keep it  relatively easy, and it seems cones for short ranges are pretty easy. At long distance it can get out to 20 squares as like 29th level. That is seriously better done with a string.

Is that documented somewhere?

I read someone mention it on the wizards forum a few days ago. The clues were, it originates from a space adjacent to you out a distance, and people are dumb.

perhaps a wizard with more control than a premature magic ejaculater can shape his blast into a circle. but then again, maybe that's only the professional mage/pornstars. i think if the mage wants to push out a flame into a forward blasting effect such as a cone, it should be possible, and if he wants a circle of magic fire to form from his fingertips, that should be possible too. it is, after all, magic, not a flamethrower. just a thought on the cone situation. allow for cones, but let either go for effect's sake.

I'm sure this has something to do with the casters chi, or contras, those special spiritual parts of everyone's body that maintain the balance of ones life force. So it makes perfect sense that the distance of his area effect spells are directly correlated with the position of his body *life force.* And his powers, as we all can sense from the mother life force, travel farther when carried on the diagonals of the holy square grid that mandates all forces, rather than accounting for actual physical distance from origin.

I don't have a problem turning blasts into cone-shaped bursts that take up relatively the same amount of area.  All you would really have to do is turn the blast square at an angle.  It will require a bit of position finegling to hit certain groupings of monsters, but it will should be reasonably manageable and balanced in power to 4.0 RAW.  I'll show you guys the blast shapes I have been playing with.  They are similar to cone-shaped bursts in 3.X but not identical.
